…More Than Sweet Potatoes

Welcome to my blog.  You’ve either been following me since I started 5 years ago on Blogger.com, you’ve just stumbled across this thing today, or you fall somewhere in between.  Which – to me – signals that you may or may not know things about me. 40s can't even be bought in Florida - Karen and Cassie brought them for me!

This is where that all changes forever!

Most of what I write is intended to be humorous.  You may or may not think what I write is funny. This is fine by me.  This blog started as a Top 10 List blog.  Every once in a while I’ll throw one in there.  I don’t have a lot of emotionally stressful life situations to draw from when writing but I write about my life experiences.

You’re so young!  What kind of life experience could you have???

Well, for one thing, I picked up and moved half-way across the country on a whim by myself.  I mean, I gave myself (and everyone else) 2 weeks notice, but I’d hardly say it was part of a plan.

I’ve been in a couple of serious relationships (by my standards) through which I’ve learned a lot about myself and who I want to be; who I want to be with.  I learned my capacity for feeling emotions and expressing them is very disproportionate.  Writing about this (and writing in general) has helped equalize this disparity a bit.

I’ve also been in a handful (or three handfuls) of non-serious relationships.

I write about those, too.

I sometimes write about running.  It can be annoying.  You can skip over those posts.  I really won’t be offended.  I found out I am “insulin resistant” in June of 2013.  All it means is that I had to change my eating habits, be slightly more active than normal, and take pills (possibly for the rest of my life) in order to avoid becoming a Type 2 diabetic.

I’m honest to a fault.  I don’t hide my shortcomings or my successes.  I will gladly tell you my opinions and know that you may disagree.  This is fine by me, also.

I'd be okay if the cop on the right was questioning me.

I’ve had my fair share of run-ins with the law.  I’ve used my sister’s ID through college.  I’ve had a creeper peep in my 2nd floor windows.  I’ve been part of more than one lawsuit.  And I’m sure there’s more legal fun in my future.

Things of note:

I moved to Florida after I ran away from home (to Miami) for a week due to a breakup and drunkenly decided to apply for jobs.  There’s a lot of story in between the applying and the moving which you can read some of here.

If you go out with me – even just one date – and you do something stupid or inconsiderate, expect it to end up on this blog.  Similar to Taylor Swift, I draw inspiration from dates.  Also similar to Taylor, I will write about you negatively.  BUT, unlike the country songstress, I will change your name and any other identifying factor.  You’re welcome. Taylor-Swift-Harry-Styles-meme I’m intensely positive.  I love adventure.  I’m impulsive. When I’m not being adventurous and impulsive (and even a little bit when I am) I am a fierce fan of control.  Over myself.  Not you.  You can do whatever you want with yourself.  You do you, man.

Why “…More Than Sweet Potatoes?”

A simple and cute story:  When my sister was pregnant with my nephew, I spent a lot of time with her taking her to appointments and cooking vegetarian food packed with protein.  One night I made her sweet potato fries and this conversation happened:

Sister: These are delicious.  I love them!

Me: Thanks!  I love sweet potatoes!

Sister: You know what I love more than sweet potatoes?

Me (joking): Me??

Sister: Yep!!!

Me: Aww!  I love you more than sweet potatoes, too!

It makes me happy and smile…so it became my blog title.

I post every Monday and Thursday (they go live at noon eastern time) usually.

I like when people like and comment on my posts.

I like you.

We’re post mates over at RoS I found you when I read our draft and knew immediately we should be friends. Love your playlist and stories. I’m thinking of a word that rhymes with “ditch” because your post is better than mine. 😉

My posts are definitely NOT better than yours. They’re a lot more wordy. Yours are more direct and lovely…similar to what I’ve seen on your blog.

We are friends now. That’s how it works, right? We say we want to be friends and then *boom* we’re friends…yes?

Agreed! That’s most definitely how it works. 😉 Yay! New friend!

This blog started as a Top 10 List blog.

Oh no! *mock horror* Not sophomoric humor! No, really. High school and college sophomores totally do top 10 lists. That’s why it’s called “sophomoric”.

But it’s all good. But just so you know, my favorite sophomoric late night talk show host is Craig Ferguson. Sorry, Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Fallon, et al. Ferguson is KING of the interview. Also, his humor is international. (Jack Yan tells me he’d demolish his boss, David Letterman, if they dared to show “Late Late Show” in New Zealand. So, they broadcast Letterman’s show, but not Ferguson’s.)

I found out I am “insulin resistant” in June of 2013.

I think it was about September of this year, for me. I’m confused to whether I’m pre-diabetic or full-on. Mostly I think my dietician just doesn’t like to fiddle with the distinction. So, yeah, just diet control. No meds. Yet.

oh and p.s. can’t wait until the post about Heifer International. They sent me a catalog in the snail mail. For reals.

Every once in a while a Top Ten list will pop back in, but they are less “Top 10 Hottest Outfits” and more “Top Ten Ways to Get Followed Home.” – which you should read if you have not done so yet. It’s here: https://morethansweetpotatoes.wordpress.com/2012/05/06/top-ten-steps-to-getting-followed-home/

The insulin resistance thing, in my world, means pre-diabetic. I get a full blood workup every 3 months to follow any and all changes to my body. Apparently a bunch of little side things can happen when you have insulin problems. Like being deficient in certain vitamins and such? Either way, I’ve changed my life style enough that I lost a bunch of weight and then got my meds decreased, which I think is a win!

Thanks for reading my About page! 🙂

I’ll have to ask my health care professionals about vitamin deficiencies. Otherwise, much of what you describe is how it’s going for me. So far, it’s going well!

And you’re welcome, Debbie. See ya around soon.
